Description

Songs For Judyis the debut release on Shakey Pictures Records, Young’s own imprint distributed by Reprise Records.
Songs For Judyis athoroughly engaging collection of live acoustic performances culled from Neil''s November 1976 solo tour and features twenty-two songs recorded at various cities along the tour. This song cycle of live recordings is particularly powerful and unique. Young had spent much of the year traveling around the world on tour with Crazy Horse. When touring on his own, he recharged and focused on songs that would not surface in recorded form for several years. Of the albums many treasures, "No One Seems To Know" would not see the light of day until now and it remains unreleased in any other iteration.
The raw versions of the tracks found onSongs For Judyreflect an artist completely unvarnished and unafraid to allow the songs to breath and to find their own shape when performed in a solo setting. Songs written in that era would come into focus and then seemingly disappear only to re-enter Young''s orbit somewhere down the road. "White Line" and "Give Me Strength" are such examples of finding the light in 1990 and 2017 respectively. It''s also fascinating to hear Young revisit early gems such as Springfield''s "Mr. Soul" (''67), "Here We Are In The Years" (''68), and "The Losing End" (''69) from some of his earliest solo recordings which remain as timeless as ever.

First, why should you get this release? It has extended versions. Neil was at the top of the mountain or heading toward one. For example, Tell My Why had an extended ending with falsetto singing that made the ending so beautiful and so essential to hear or A Man Needs a Maid where he weaves the song from a opening that sounds like Like a Hurricane is about to begin to a mysterious journey where Neil weaves the song into a musical painting. There are songs here that Neil introduced for example White Line which later became a Crazy Horse song that was rumored to be on the original Chrome Dreams in Crazy Horse form. There are songs here where he played them acoustic for the first time on a album live, The Losing End from Neil and Crazy Horse’s first record together. They all have a magical feel on this album. Neil’s spirit seemed to be in a happy place at this moment in time. The songs have energy, spirit, to the point I like this album better than Live at Massey Hall. It also sounds better where the audience on Live at Massey was so loud in between songs it was bothersome sometimes. Here Neil’s voice is up front and his guitar is just so perfectly mixed. It’s amazing that these songs came from a tape deck considering how clear they are. Overall, I just feel this album samples his acoustic music the best at this point in time. He extends some songs, or changes the songs, or adds a different rhythm to songs. On a lot of the songs his singing changes from the originals just taking these songs making them fresh and new for even today. This is Neil’s best of the best acoustically speaking and essential for all Neil fans.

For those that have heard the unofficial album, "Joel Bernstein Tapes" this is that but with much better sound quality and a rearranged order. For those that have not heard that unofficial album, this is not a single concert like his other archive releases but a compilation of live songs throughout his 1976 tour. This is Neil in the peak of his music career. I couldn''t recommend this enough to someone who is looking for more 70''s Neil Young.

There are several artists that I own everything that they release, and Neil is certainly one of them. “Songs for Judy” is the latest in his Performance Series (#7) and it compiles songs from his 1976 tour with Crazy Horse of North America. Neil did an acoustic set first, and after a break he and the Horse did the electric set. These songs are all from his acoustic set from several different venues in February 76.

Neil is clearly high throughout, yet relaxed and comfortable. It’s easy to hear the difference in venues by the sound quality of the recordings. Although this doesn’t negatively affect the experience, it is partially responsible for the slightest bit of disjointed feeling I got on my first listen. Not enough to deduct a star from my rating, but it did effect my first impression slightly.

I’ve seen Neil many times in an acoustic setting and these performances are fairly ragged at times. Not that this is a bad thing, as he’s clearly playing in the moment which is when he is at his best. Perfect isn’t always a good thing, and I feel these performances are a great example of that.

Although this release lacks the feel of a complete performance, each song stands on its own. For me the disc gathers momentum, and the most impressive performances come toward the end. The real stand outs are “Campainer”, “Old Laughing Lady”, “Here We are Through the Years”, and “Pocahontas”. Each one offering a different feel from the versions that I’m more familiar with. Brilliant would be an understatement.

I’m really looking forward to hearing this one on Vinyl, and although the source is digital I think it will benefit from Chris Bellman’s mastering for vinyl. As for the CD, it sounds much better than the bootleg version of these performances, and Tim Mulligan has again created a classic sound from the digital world. No doubt this release will age very well after several spins and I look forward to more historical titles from Neil’s Archives in the future.

UPDATE for Vinyl:
Neil has always been adamant about his vinyl being the highest quality, yet recently he has apparently given up on 200 gram and 180 gram pressings. That being said, this pressing is of good quality, although it has a few minor issues. Not enough to be an issue as the sound is excellent.

After hearing this release several times it has become a favorite in the NYAPS series. If like me, you prefer vinyl you will not be disappointed with this double LP. Great performances and excellent sound quality. Highly recommend for anyone who appreciates Neil Young.

Live recordings of stoned stinky, hippies hootin'' and hollerin'' for a stoned stinky hippy (Neil Young) - imitating Bob Dylan. Neil Young tries his hand at playing a guitar, a banjo, a piano and a Wurlitzer-none of which he does successfully. Enough cowboy chords- on bad guitars with dirty strings-to last a lifetime. How Neil Young got famous, I''ll never know. If you ever forget how low the standards of the dirty tye-dyed hippies were, just listen to this drivel. After listening to this, I had to take a bath to wash away the hippy stink of cigarette smoke, funyuns and seven day body odor.

In powerfully wasted performances spanning his whole career, this tour was exceptional even in Neil terms. This comp does these wildly diverse tunes justice. The most intense versions of Tell Me Why & Mr. Soul I’ve heard, a forlorn, pre-Close-Encounters-ish Man Needs A Maid, a pensive After the Gold Rush - all tunes are remarkably performed at a time when Neil simply had no peer on the ex-folkie music scene. Get this.

This was not a solo acoustic tour. In November of 1976 Neil Young toured with Crazy Horse. I saw the November 1, 1976 show at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the November 4, 1976 show at the LA Forum. The songs on this CD are from the acoustic portions of the shows on that tour. Hopefully Neil Young will release the Neil Young/Crazy Horse portion of these shows because they are the best I have ever seen Neil Young with Crazy Horse out of the 15 times I saw them together between 1976 and 1996.

That aside, this is a great CD. The songs are well performed and the sound is excellent. Several of the songs on this CD, most notably "Campaigner", "Too Far Gone", "Human Highway", "Love is a Rose", "Pocahontas" and "Give Me Strength" were new at the time I saw these concerts. All of these except "Love is a Rose" are on the Neil Young "Hitchhiker" CD released in 2017.

I wont go back over the history of this/these recording(s) but in short would like to say that this is yet another superb release from the NYA and truly ''gives the people what they want'' after years of having only the bootleg, which some will undoubtedly keep as the ''souvenir'' it was originally to be, as famously told by Joel Bernstein and Cameron Crowe in the liner notes.

The music contained here captures Neil riding the great edge of the sweet roller coaster sounds, he so magnificently put forth during much of his 1976 activity, and it reveals itself perfectly on this disc. No need to review individual songs, as it is all essential in this reviewers opinion. Rumors of an accompanying electric set is to follow and this long time fan cannot wait!! DON''T MISS IT!!!

Neil rolls on down his Human Highway (one song on this varied set) suitably stoned in the Seventies.
This simply showcases the fact that while stoned Neil Young can deliver his best solo work ever recorded live. Taken from various shows & originally known as THE JOEL BERNSTEIN BOOTLEGS this recording highlights a remarkable talent at work. The recordings curated by both Bernstein & Cameron Crowe of Almost Famous renown took decades to piece together & now finally see the light of day. Neil Young is one of the few artists who truly understands how both acoustic guitars & electric guitars should be played (along with Keith Richards).
To pin point any one track is pointless, this is a labor of love & should be listen to in it''s entirety.
If you are expecting The Eagles this is NOT for you. If you want Raw & Real it is!

Ici, les titres interprétés sont devenus des classiques de son répertoire, des chansons sublimes: Heart of gold, After the gold rush, Tell me why, The needle and the damage done, Sugar mountain...On pourrait toutes les citer!
